Companies participating in the sector project developed by BSCA in partnership with Apex-Brasil exported the product to 78 countries last year, with revenues increasing 152.4% over 2015
Exports by Brazilian companies participating in the “Brazil. The Coffee Nation” sector project carried out by the Brazil Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA) in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) resulted in revenues of US$ 1.57 billion for the country in 2016, an annual record due to a substantial increase of 152.4% compared to the US$ 622 million recorded the previous year.
The project comprises 177 Brazilian companies, of which, last year, 55 exported to 78 countries. The largest buyer of Brazilian coffees commercialized via “Brazil. The Coffee Nation”, in 2016, was the United States, which invested US$ 388.2 million in acquiring the product. In order, Germany (US$ 271.4 million), Belgium (US$ 146.7 million), Japan (US$ 129.3 million) and Italy (US$ 99.2 million) followed.
For the manager of “Brazil. The Coffee Nation” at Apex-Brasil, Claudio Borges, it is gratifying to reap the good fruits of this work together with BSCA. “I take great satisfaction in seeing another year of arduous work being rewarded, work that begins in the fields and finishes with the satisfaction of consumers and in the sophistication of coffee shops, which have been increasing around the world. Along the entire coffee production chain, two factors unite all who are involved in it: the love for coffee and the incessant search for quality that adds value to the product,” he highlights.
BSCA director Vanusia Nogueira, who is the manager of “Brazil. The Coffee Nation” for the association, explains that the results obtained in 2016 simultaneously bring a sense of accomplishment and of greater responsibility together with all the partners. “We will continue seeking to perfect our activities, bringing greater returns for the investment done through the BSCA/Apex-Brasil project and by entrepreneurs in the coffee sector," she says.
ABOUT THE SECTOR PROJECT
“Brazil. The Coffee Nation,” developed through a partnership between BSCA and Apex-Brasil, has the goal of promoting Brazilian specialty coffees on the international market. The objective is to strengthen the image of Brazilian producers around the world and to position Brazil as a supplier of high-quality, from the use cutting-edge technology coming from research done in the country. The project also aims to exhibit the exclusive certification and traceability processes used in the production of specialty coffees in Brazil, showcasing its socio-environmental responsibility and incorporating competitive advantage to Brazilian coffees.
Started in 2008, the term of the current project is from May 2016 to May 2018 and the target markets are: (i) the USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, China/Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia for green specialty coffee; and (ii) the USA, China, Germany and the United Arab Emirates for roasted and ground coffee.
